ABOUT WOLF & CROW

Zachary and Mathieu have been friends and musical partners since 2002. They share an obsession for musicology, film, history, and design, which all guide their creative process.

With the inception of Wolf & Crow in 2009, the duo sought to craft a fully immersive world. They began by developing a fictional narrative with characters whose stories paralleled their true life experiences. Then set it inside a beautifully haunting American-Primitive backdrop imbued with religious and totemic mysticism.

At its technical core is an exercise in minimalist methodology—seeking ways to express more with fewer, artfully executed strokes. Their commitment to colorful storytelling reaches beyond the content of the lyrics. Every element serves to paint this world into existence, or to propel the traveller through it.

Wolf & Crow is based in San Francisco with a frequently changing line-up of backing musicians from the Bay Area music scene. In the center is Zachary's and Mathieu’s sweetly chilling harmonies, woody folk-guitar picking, and trademark rustic slide guitar.

Their music shares characteristics of folk revival veterans like Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, Simon & Garfunkle, and Neil Young, with influences from southern spirituals and roots blues.

They've been compared to neofolk contemporaries like Iron & Wine, Bon Iver, and Damien Rice. However, their sound—which they've branded cinematic folk—is made distinct by the music’s filmscore-inspired instrumentation and vivid lyrical narrative.
